Couples Therapy in London & Online

LENGTH — 50 minutes

FREQUENCY — Biweekly / Weekly

FORMAT — Face-to-Face / Online

Couples can sometimes find it hard to have a sense of their relationship as a whole. You may see things from your own point of view, at times from your partner's, and it can be a struggle to see what you are creating together.

Couples therapy gives the relationship itself a space to be thought about. Together we explore the kind of relationship you have co-created, why it is not quite how you would both like it to be, and what can change, working from a position that is non-blaming and non-judgemental.

Who couples therapy can help

Couples come to see me at many different points, for example when:

• arguments keep repeating and never seem to resolve

• you have drifted into living like flatmates, with little closeness or intimacy

• trust has been broken by an affair or betrayal

• a big life change is putting the relationship under strain: a new baby, infertility, a move, redundancy or retirement

• one of you is living with depression, anxiety or a long-term health condition

• you come from different cultures or families and keep clashing over expectations

• you are unsure whether to stay together, and want to think it through carefully

You do not need to be in crisis to come. Many couples come because they want to understand themselves better and protect what they have.

How I work with couples

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and a BPC-registered Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, trained at Tavistock Relationships, one of the leading centres for couple therapy training. My approach is psychoanalytic: I pay attention to the patterns that play out between you, and to the less conscious hopes, fears and histories that each of you brings to the relationship.

I am also trained in other models, including cognitive-behavioural and systemic family therapy, and I use practical exercises where they help. The aim is not to decide who is right, but to help you both understand what keeps happening between you, so you can respond to each other differently.

For couples who want faster, more focused work on closeness and physical intimacy, I also offer the Intentional Intimacy™ Method, a 30-day intensive programme.

What to expect

Initial consultation. We meet for 50 minutes, usually online, so that you can each describe what is happening and what you hope will change. By the end, we will have a sense of whether and how we might work together.

Regular sessions. Sessions are 50 minutes, weekly, at the same time each week. Some couples come for a focused piece of work over a few months; others prefer open-ended work. We decide this together and review it as we go.

Between sessions. Couples often notice changes outside the room first: a conversation that goes differently, or a moment of closeness that had been missing.

Common benefits

  • Greater intimacy through empathy

  • A clearer understanding of yourself, your partner and the relationship as a whole

  • Better ability to communicate, manage differences and resolve conflict

  • Space to make difficult decisions together, with care

When one partner has a health condition

I have a particular specialism in working with couples where one partner is living with a long-term or neurological condition, such as Parkinson's, MS, dementia or a brain injury. Read more about couples therapy and chronic illness.
